It is truly horrifying to me that anyone in any church, but particularly the leadership, would celebrate the life of a misogynistic racist who preached false Christ and made millions of dollars from hate speech.
Unfortunately, in this country, after the Orthodox tradition, the second most prevalent flavour of religion is right-wing American conservative evangelical Christianity, which has long ago left any Jesus-centric teaching behind in favour of politics and discrimination. As an English speaker, there is very little choice of which church to go to in this city. But I’m having to think very long and hard about whether my conscience will allow me to continue worshipping where I do.
How I long for a church community that actually celebrates Christ values, opens their doors to all seekers, serves the local community, and doesn’t marginalise the different. This hasn’t been my experience here since moving from SE Asia, and it’s getting worse.
My heart is breaking…
